With CMS you may obtain several CDs of audio files (i.e., some gigabytes of data) by just activating a relatively small executable file (2 - 3 MB, typically). This is possible thanks to the sound synthesis that is made on the "client" PC, i.e., on the PC where the CMS executable file is activated. With CMS, the music is sent to the destination PC (the “client”) as music score information, including each individual note to be played (pitch, duration and volume) and the type of sound to be used for each note. Short audio samples for each type of sound required, as well as a software sound synthesizer, are also sent. Everything is packed into a single executable file. When such an executable file is launched on the client PC, the whole music is synthesized by replicating, chaining, transposing and changing the volume of the basic audio samples according to the music score information. The typical size of the CMS executable file is 2 to 3 MB, and this is sufficient to create several gigabytes of audio data, i.e., the equivalent of many audio CDs. For example, the CMS executable file of Mozart's Requiem creates some 100 audio files that may be recorded on 13 CDs. It should be noted that the quality of the synthesized sounds does not depend on the audio card installed on the PC, as the sound synthesis is made using the samples contained in the executable file, not in the PC sound card. This ensures that the quality of the sound is essentially the same regardless the specific PC equipment used. The CMS synthesizer software only runs under Windows, so the sound synthesis cannot be made on Mac, Linux, or other machines/operating systems. In the case of non-Windows machines it is convenient to run the CMS executable file on a Windows PC, and then move the resulting audio files to the non-Windows machines using file transfer or CDs. If the non-Windows machine includes some Windows emulation environment you may try to run the CMS executable file within such an environment, however it is not possible to ensure that everything will work as in a native Windows environment. VS is based on a similar principle, as the sound synthesis is also made on the client PC, however the sound synthesizer must be downloaded and installed first in the form of a plug-in that runs inside your web browser (e.g., Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc.). The plug-in is named “Myriad Music plug-in”, and it can be downloaded (free) from http://www.myriad-online.com/en/products/mmplugin.htm . The Myriad Music plug-in runs under Microfoft Windows as well as under Mac OS. With VS, the music is sent to the destination PC as music score information, which also include the lyrics to be sung. The Myriad Music plug-in takes care of transforming the score information and lyrics into audible music. . The sound quality does not depend significantly on the specific PC equipment used. The typical size of a single VS file for one song and one voice is in the order of few tens kilobytes. One work usually contains several voices and/or songs, so the total file size for all the voices and songs is in the order of some hundreds kilobytes up to 1 or 2 MB. Should you have any technical
